The Medical Account of Death
Welcome, friends, to another week. Some may only think about Jesus’ crucifixion once a year during “Easter.” Many return to concentrating on their lives, rarely thinking of his death again. Millions take this event for granted without knowing the real story. Society downplays his death. For example, do you realize there are 31, 000,000,000 paintings and photos of Jesus’ death on the internet? Of this number, only 4,960,00 portray blood. Thus, millions see politically correct, beautiful, peaceful images with only minute traces of physical abuse. However, the crucifixion of Christ was one of extreme gore and humiliation.
Today, political correctness rules many churches. Several denominations, in particular, depict Jesus on the cross with a few drops of blood dripping from his brow. Therefore, many take this event for granted, rarely realizing the enormous amount of blood, gore, and gruesome acts associated with his death. During Jesus’s crucifixion, the Roman government remained unmatched in brutality and torture. For example, soldiers publicly humiliated Christ by stripping him of his clothing and beating him with a whip of lead and sheep bones. To that end, soldiers frequently miscounted, producing more than the legal 40 lashes. With each blow, the whip tore the skin, making it resemble paper and creating contusions (ruptured capillaries causing bruising and swelling.) As a result, his muscles tore, causing deep, open wounds.
By the time he carried the cross, Jesus was sleep deprived, severely whipped, dehydrated, and mocked. To add insult to injury, soldiers plucked out his beard for blasphemy- the ultimate humiliation. (Isaiah 50:6 and 2 Samuel 10:4-5) (Matthew 26:67). Finally, soldiers shoved a crown of thorns into Jesus’s scalp, causing additional pain, profuse bleeding, and additional humiliation. Last, they exposed his privates by partially covering them. https://robertcliftonrobinson.com/2014/12/21/the-graphic-suffering-of-jesus/
The cross resembled a “T.” Soldiers made Jesus carry the wooden crossbar weighing approximately 75 to 100 more pounds. Contrary to popular photos, Christ could not have carried the entire cross, as it would have weighed close to 300 pounds. Due to the beatings Christ suffered, he did not have the strength to carry the heavy object. In addition, Jesus endured many hours without water while being tortured, causing severe dehydration. As a result of these beatings, his organs began shutting down. Therefore, he experienced cardiac and respiratory distress and dehydration simultaneously. In addition, infections begin in the open wounds producing more pain. https://www.josh.org/resurrection-crucifixion-details/
Once at the site, soldiers nailed him to the cross by driving spikes through his wrists (During this period, wrists were considered part of the hands.). They also twisted his legs in an unnatural position to drive the spikes into his feet. Therefore, soldiers gave him myrrh mixed with wine (This was a weak concoction compared to today’s pain relievers). This combination would not have had much effect or dulled the pain substantially; therefore, he was not pain-free.) Last, due to beatings around the upper torso, his lungs suffered unbearable pain as he inhaled or exhaled. Please visit the following link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-EVfxABSoU
However, billions take Jesus’ death for granted. Yet, Jesus could have stepped down from the cross anytime he desired. Likewise, he could have also stopped these cruel acts; however, because he loved us so much, he allowed himself to be severely tortured, humiliated, and crucified. He died for anyone who believes. Once we believe in his death, burial and resurrection, we are saved, and our sins are forgiven. Please do not take his sacrifice for granted as I once did. Had he not died, there would not be salvation: It is with the heart that we believe. Romans 10:9-10 When, we believe Christ died, was buried, and rose again according to the scriptures, he saves us from the wrath to come. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 For more reading, please click on the following links.
